About this work:

The first tale, Ophelia's Song, reflects Medtner's interest in Shakespearean imagery. Its modal language and restrained lyricism create an atmosphere of melancholy and antiquity. The second tale, The Knight's March, presents a heroic and chivalric character, providing a dramatic counterpart to the introspection of the first piece. Together they exemplify Medtner's tendency to construct cycles through the contrast of complementary images.
