About this work:
The Two Elegies, Op. 59 are among Medtner's final solo piano compositions and represent the deeply introspective voice of his late years. Written during World War II while living in England, these works are imbued with a sense of reflection, nobility, and spiritual resignation. Dedicated to the Russian philosopher and close friend Ivan Ilyin and his wife Natalia, the pieces embody Medtner's lifelong concern with memory, faith, and the preservation of cultural values in a troubled age.
