About this work:

The Theme and Variations, Op. 55 is one of Medtner's last major solo piano works and a remarkable demonstration of his mastery of variation form. Written in the early 1930s, shortly after the paired sonatas of Op. 53 and the pedagogical pieces of Op. 54, the work consists of a theme followed by a series of variations that transform the original idea through a wide range of moods, textures, and pianistic styles. It stands as a late testament to Medtner's lifelong belief in organic musical growth—the idea that an entire composition can emerge from a single musical seed.
