About this work:
The Night Wind Sonata is widely regarded as Medtner's greatest piano sonata and one of the most ambitious works in the piano repertoire. Completed in 1911 and dedicated to Sergei Rachmaninoff, the sonata was inspired by a poem of Fyodor Tyutchev concerning the mysterious and chaotic voice of the night wind. Medtner described the entire work as being "in an epic spirit." It is his longest sonata, lasting approximately 35 minutes.
