Sonata in A minor, Op. 30

Volume 6
FUTURE RELEASE, VOLUME 6
LISTEN

About this work:
Composed in 1914, the sonata stands at the threshold of a dramatic period in both European and Russian history. While Medtner avoided explicit political programs, later commentators have viewed the work as embodying the tension, uncertainty, and emotional gravity of the war years. The nickname "War Sonata" was never used by the composer in publication, but it has remained associated with the work because of its historical circumstances and dramatic character.
