About this work:

The second cycle of Forgotten Melodies is comprised of five pieces, where the first and last pairs are linked melodically and thematically. Despite the suggestion of a serene quality from the title of the first piece, “Meditation”, Medtner evokes an introspective, but yet tormented character—as if one is struggling to find peace within. The second piece, “Romance,” utilizes a similar melody from the previous movement, but continues the brooding and haunting qualities in the form of a waltz resembling that of Chopin. “Spring,” the third piece, portrays the transition from the wintery, thawing temperatures into the warmer season—almost like experiencing a rebirth of sorts. “Morning Song,” the next piece in the set, is tranquil, and even nostalgic, especially with the change to the minor key in the middle section. For the last piece, “Tragic Sonata,” Medtner indicates that it is to be played without break following the previous movement. In this piece, the composer returns back to the tormented and tempestuous mood. Later in the work, we experience a brief respite from the turbulence by recalling the melancholic tune from “Morning Song.” Following this nostalgic memory, the composer brings back the menacing theme (marked minaccioso) once again as emotions spiral furiously out of control to the conclusion of the work.
